Where is Saddam Hussein? We’ve all been wondering, ever since the former Iraqi leader disappeared during the war. Well, now a cynically amusing little pop-up book titled Where’s Saddam? attempts to answer our questions.
The book opens with a cowboy-hatted-and-booted George W. Bush, striding purposefully forward (and away from a White House-shaped treehouse decorated with childlike signs reading “No libralz aloud” and “Evil doers keep out!”), dog by his side, exclaiming, “That darned tyrant! Just wait ’till I get my hands on him.”
That pretty much sets the tone for the book, which was written by Henry Beard (a founding member of National Lampoon) and John Boswell and illustrated, cartoon-style, by Ron Barrett and Gary Hallgren.
Bush searches for his nemesis in Baghdad (where Osama bin Laden pops up from the trunk of a car), in the desert (where an Elvis-like character with a Saddamesque mustache appears in a Las Vegas-type oasis), on a tropical island (where we glimpse cast members from TV’s “Survivor,”) and … well, you get the idea.
In the end, rest assured, Saddam does appear. The whole thing may be a bit over the top for some. But for others, if you’re in the mood for some silly levity, check this out.
