Cal Dooley, a former Democratic congressman from California, has been tapped to take over the American Chemistry Council (ACC), the group announced on Wednesday. The ACC, which represents companies like DuPont, Dow Chemical and Exxon Mobil, is currently run by Jack Gerard, who has accepted an offer to head the American Petroleum Institute, beginning on Sept. 1. Dooley will start at ACC on Sept. 8, according to the announcement. Since retiring from Congress in 2005, Dooley has led the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), where he helped manage the group’s merger with the Food Products Association. GMA’s public profile has been raised in recent weeks as the group has mounted a public campaign challenging new mandates to increase the production of corn-based ethanol. GMA, which represents food makers like Kellogg’s, has argued that the policy has raised food prices, a position strongly disputed by ethanol producers who lay the blame on high oil prices and a weak dollar. Dooley served seven terms in Congress and was a founding member of the New Democrat Coalition, a group of pro-business centrists that promotes policies supporting high-tech companies and free trade. “We are very excited about Cal coming to ACC, as he brings a breadth of experience and leadership skills that are critical to the challenges and opportunities we face in the business of chemistry,” said Bob Wood, the chairman of ACC’s board of directors. |
