Local GOP disowns nominee vs. Shuler
Posted: 07/23/08 06:49 PM [ET]

A major county Republican Party has “disavowed” the campaign of 11th congressional district GOP nominee and Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower.

“[T]here is no longer any coordination between our two organizations,” Henderson County Republican Party Chairman Robert Danos said in a release, according to The Asheville Citizen-Times.

Mumpower had announced earlier this month that he was “suspending” his campaign until half of the county chapters in the district signed on to a statement of “core principles” listed on Mumpower’s website.

The Citizen-Times reported last week that Mumpower was reinstating his campaign after receiving such assurances from eight counties.

The Citizen-Times also reported that the Henderson County chapter refused to sign on to Mumpower’s call for a statewide conservative movement, and that the “final issue” was Mumpower suspending his campaign.

Henderson County accounts for about 15 percent of the district’s voters.

First-term Democrat Heath Shuler’s district is strongly conservative and had been a top GOP target, but Mumpower has raised very little money for his campaign.
