Roberts goes negative, Democrats file complaint
Posted: 07/14/08 07:19 PM [ET]

Sen. Pat Roberts’s (R) campaign continued to go negative against Democratic opponent Jim Slattery in a new television ad.

The ad continues in the same vein as a previous radio ad, labeling Slattery as a Washington insider.

“For the last 14 years, he’s been a Washington lobbyist. Slattery worked for special interests and was paid millions,” the ad says. “The choice is clear: Slattery helping the special interests that made him rich or Pat Roberts, who has never stopped working for Kansas.”

Roberts currently leads Slattery by 17 points, according to a poll commissioned by the Roberts campaign in late June. Slattery served as a congressman in the 1980s and 1990s.

The Kansas Democratic Party filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission, alleging that the Roberts campaign violated rules that require candidates to clearly state their approval for the message in the ads. They argue that the semi-obstructed view of Roberts violates FEC rules.

Roberts spokeswoman Molly Haase said: “This pathetic attempt proves one thing: They are desperate to keep people from knowing the truth about the millions of dollars in favors Washington lobbyist Jim Slattery has done for special interests."
