Kennedy out until January
Posted: 09/08/08 10:43 AM [ET]

Sen. Edward Kennedy will not return to Capitol Hill until next January, his staff said in a statement.

The Massachusetts Democrat, recovering from a cancerous brain tumor, will work from his home in Hyannis Port, Mass., until the 111th Congress convenes next year.

"As Senator Kennedy said two weeks ago in Denver, he intends to be on the floor of the United States Senate next January when we begin to write the next great chapter of American progress," his office said in a statement.

"Senator Kennedy's doctors are pleased with his progress so far and have recommended that he continue to work from home through the fall."

The patriarch of the Kennedy family last made a public appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. An aide said that the senator will be in touch with his staff and colleagues via video conferencing from his Massachusetts home.
