More people watched John McCain’s acceptance speech than rival Barack Obama’s. Nielsen ratings numbers show 500,000 more viewers watched McCain’s Thursday night speech in St. Paul than tuned in to his Democratic rival the week before. About 38.9 million people watched McCain accept the Republican nomination, while 38.4 million watched Obama’s outdoor address at Denver’s Invesco Field, according to the Hollywood Reporter. That makes McCain’s speech the most-watched in convention history. He was aided by the NFL kickoff game that appeared on NBC right before he spoke. NBC logged 13.6 million viewers for its coverage of the Republican nominee. But the network only had 6.1 million viewers when Obama spoke. And more than 37.2 million watched McCain running mate Sarah Palin’s speech on Wednesday. Palin had far more viewers than Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) or Obama running mate Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), who spoke on day two and day three of the Democratic National Convention. It will be difficult for analysts to determine which convention had the most viewers since Republicans canceled its Monday night program because of concerns about Hurricane Gustav. Nielsen Media Research announced it would not provide convention ratings for Monday night because of the Republicans’ decision.
