• DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE. Brig. Gen. Doyle D. Broome Jr., currently the director of strategy and analysis, J-5, at the U.S. Joint Forces Command, Norfolk, Va., will be the deputy commanding general, United States Army Cadet Command, Fort Monroe, Va.

Lt. Gen. James R. Helmly will become the chief of the Office of Defense Representative-Pakistan at the United States Central Command, Pakistan.

Brig. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks has been selected to become the deputy commanding general of the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.

• DEPARTMENT OF STATE. The president intends to nominate Eric M. Bost to be ambassador to the Republic of South Africa. Bost currently serves as undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer services at Department of Agriculture.

Bush has chosen Lisa Bobbie Schreiber Hughes to be ambassador to the Republic of Suriname. Schreiber Hughes is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service.

The president intends to nominate Earl Anthony Wayne to be ambassador to Argentina. Wayne currently serves as assistant secretary of state for economic and business affairs.

• DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS. President Bush has nominated Undersecretary of Veterans Affairs for Benefits Adm. Daniel L. Cooper to remain in that job for a four-year term.

• WHITE HOUSE. The president has named Dana M. Perino as deputy assistant to the president and deputy press secretary. Perino recently served as special assistant to the president and deputy press secretary at the White House. Kenneth A. Lisaius will replace Perino in those positions.

The president has chosen Christopher G. Michel as special assistant to the president for speechwriting. Michel recently served as a speechwriter at the White House.
