Reality TV chef brings a new kind of beef to Capitol Hill
Posted: 07/09/08 05:42 PM [ET]

The one hazard of having lunch at the new Good Stuff Eatery burger joint on the Hill is that you might return to the office dripping in bacon grease and wiping away a milkshake mustache.

Spike Mendelsohn, a contestant on Bravo’s “Top Chef” reality show, began offering his handcrafted burgers and homemade shakes July 7.

Two of the menu’s standout items incorporate thick slabs of bacon. The Coletti’s Smokehouse burger is a flavorful marriage of bacon, cheddar cheese, fried onion rings and made-from-scratch barbecue sauce. Spike’s 5 Napkin burger — a stack of meat, cheese, bacon, fried egg and “Good Stuff” sauce — is even more decadent.

The accompanying fries, seasoned with fresh thyme and rosemary and cracked pepper, have a golden crust on the outside but are soft and smooth inside.

It’s a shame the burgers are so filling, because Mendelsohn churns out a wonderfully authentic toasted marshmallow shake for dessert. He makes a special “marshmallow milk” to provide the unmistakable flavor but tempers the sweetness with Greek yogurt so diners aren’t left with a cloying sugar coating in their mouths.

The menu also has four wedge salads to choose from, but who goes to a burger restaurant for a salad? Heed this advice: Come hungry, cover your suits and blouses with a bib, and order one of Mendelsohn’s hearty, generously topped sandwiches.
